“They Said What?” NTT IndyCar Series Edition

By: Ashley McCubbin

Sometimes when you stick a microphone in front of a driver’s face – especially when they’re mad, you have no clue what they may say and a couple of times you’ll hear something that surprises you or gives you a bit of a perspective.

Throughout the NTT IndyCar Series season, there were quite a few of these moments. So it seems only fitting we take a glance back through the year at what was said.

Chris Jones | IndyCar

I think just always stay motivated. I think it’s easy to become unmotivated or unfocused if you’re having a bad race weekend. I think the biggest thing is always believing in yourself that you can do it and it doesn’t matter what others think about you, or how they think about your driving. If you actually believe you do it, your mind will be a lot better than others that age. – Colton Herta

“While things could have been a little better earlier, you can look back and say woulda, coulda, shoulda, but two out of five I’d take, be happy with that. Now we have to go to next year and make sure we don’t have the bad races we had in order to win the championship.” – Bobby Rahal

“It’s just like we got to figure out how to smooth that out. We really only had a couple of bad races. St. Louis was a killer. Obviously we earned some results without having a lot of luck, which is kind of unique for us. We need to get a little combination of luck and get our performance back up there.” – Graham Rahal

Chris Owens | IndyCar

“It’s definitely helpful. I think one of the guys that I lean on is Ryan Hunter-Reay. Him and I tend to have similar driving styles. A lot of times he’ll have the answers to questions that I have, which his very helpful. It’s an advantage to have five other teammates, but it’s also a lot to take in because everyone has different approaches. So you just have to feel the room and know what your teammates like. Because for example if (Alexander) Rossi says the car is a little loose, it’s really loose for me and Ryan. So you just need to get a feel for what each teammate likes.” – Zach Veach

“Is it possible to not say the (Indianapolis) 500? It was, for me, one of my best experiences ever in a racecar, as far as an event goes and everything goes on with that race and the history and everything and the fans. That’s the highlight for sure. But then beyond that, there’s a lot of fun places that we went to, a lot of fun tracks. Long Beach comes to mind, COTA is always a favourite to drive as well, Road America – another great circuit. There’s a lot of races that I look forward to. A lot of highlights, but the 500 for sure is a big one.” – Marcus Ericsson

I think just take everything as it comes to you. Everything won’t be perfect or come to you smoothly. Lots of things can happen in short periods of time so you have to be ready for it, because it will go by you and you won’t be able to take the opportunity. So I think being ready and always just working through what challenges come your way is the best way to go through it. I’m a big believer in things happen for a reason so that’s probably what I’d tell someone, or my younger me.” – Pato O’Ward
